One of the most terrifying spates of violence in Ecuador’s modern history began on Jan. 7. In quick succession, two jailed gang leaders escaped, riots broke out in the country’s main prisons and bombs exploded in several cities. By Efrain OteroTOCORON, Venezuela (Reuters) - Venezuela has completed the first phase of regaining control of its prison system, Interior Minister Remigio Ceballos said on Saturday, speaking at the Aragua jail near Tocoron, just days after security forces seized the prison that was infamously run by prisoners. The jail had restaurants, bars and even outdoor swimming pools, among other luxuries, and it was the operating center for feared criminal gang Tren de Aragua, according to Venezuela's government. The jail housed 1,600 inmates, Ceballos said, adding that most have already been relocated to other prisons across the country. Authorities have also recaptured some 88 members of Tren de Aragua who escaped during the raid by security forces, which took place on Wednesday. Following the raid, the Tren de Aragua has been totally dismantled, Ceballos said, without explaining further.

CNN —Emma Coronel Aispuro, the wife of Mexican drug lord Joaquin “El Chapo” Guzman, is set to be released from a US prison on Wednesday, officials said. Coronel was sentenced to three years in prison in November 2021 after pleading guilty to drug trafficking and money laundering charges related to her husband’s narcotics empire. Coronel was being held at a Residential Reentry Management facility in Long Beach, California, according to the prison bureau’s inmate locator. During her sentencing, Coronel, a dual US-Mexican citizen, expressed deep remorse for her involvement with Guzman and the Sinaloa Cartel and the harm she may have caused. Guzman, who twice escaped from prison in Mexico, is serving a life sentence at Colorado’s Supermax prison after he was convicted in 2019 of engaging in a criminal enterprise, drug trafficking and firearms charges.
